Sabri Brothers – The Eternal Voices of Sufi Devotion and Qawwali Heritage

When one speaks of Qawwali and Sufi music in Pakistan, one name rises above all — the Sabri Brothers. As torchbearers of a centuries-old tradition, they not only revived the genre but transformed it into a global movement of spiritual and cultural significance.

The Sabri Brothers consisted primarily of Haji Ghulam Farid Sabri and Haji Maqbool Ahmed Sabri, who were born into a musical family deeply rooted in the Chishti Sufi Order. Their lineage traces back to renowned qawwals and classical musicians, and from an early age, they trained under their father and other masters in the intricate techniques of Qawwali, Raag, and rhythm.

Their style was steeped in purity, classical training, and spiritual sincerity. They were known for their distinctive vocal delivery — powerful, raw, and charged with emotion. Songs like “Tajdar-e-Haram” and “Bhar Do Jholi Meri Ya Muhammad” not only mesmerized listeners but brought many to tears, regardless of their religious background.

The Sabri Brothers were among the first Pakistani artists to perform at Carnegie Hall, New York, and the Royal Albert Hall in London, introducing international audiences to the mystical beauty of Qawwali and Sufi poetry.

Their repertoire included kalams from Amir Khusro, Bulleh Shah, Allama Iqbal, and other revered poets. Whether performing at shrines, music festivals, or international stages, their presence was magnetic, drawing thousands of devoted fans seeking spiritual ecstasy.

Beyond music, the Sabri Brothers were cultural ambassadors of Pakistan, promoting peace, harmony, and spiritual enlightenment. The untimely deaths of both Ghulam Farid Sabri (1994) and Maqbool Ahmed Sabri (2011) marked the end of an era. Yet, their legacy lives on through their family — including Amjad Sabri, who was tragically martyred in 2016 — and countless disciples and qawwals inspired by their artistry.
