About Artist
Bohemia – The Pioneer of Punjabi Rap and Desi Hip-Hop
Bohemia, whose real name is Roger David, is widely regarded as the founding father of Punjabi rap music and one of the most influential figures in the South Asian music scene. Born on October 15, 1979, in Karachi, Pakistan, Bohemia later moved to the United States, where he grew up in California. He fused the cultural essence of Punjabi with the raw energy of American hip-hop, creating a new sub-genre that came to be known as Desi Hip-Hop.
Bohemia made waves with his debut album, Vich Pardesan De (2002), which was one of the first Punjabi rap albums ever released. But it was his second album, Pesa Nasha Pyar (2006) that propelled him to international fame. Songs like Kali Denali and Sahara became instant anthems for youth across Pakistan, India, and the global South Asian diaspora.
What sets Bohemia apart is his authentic storytelling, often touching on topics like immigrant struggles, street life, cultural identity, and personal transformation. His raw, unapologetic lyrics reflect the real-life experiences of a Desi growing up in the West, battling identity crises and social barriers while holding on to his roots.
Bohemia’s influence quickly spread to Bollywood, where he collaborated with major stars and music producers. His work with Akshay Kumar on Chandni Chowk to China and other soundtracks exposed him to a broader audience, without compromising his gritty, underground style.
In 2012, Bohemia released Thousand Thoughts, which won Best International Album at the PTC Punjabi Music Awards. The album cemented his status as a global icon in the South Asian music industry. Despite his fame, Bohemia has remained true to his art form, often choosing independent releases over commercial record labels to maintain creative control.
Beyond music, Bohemia has inspired a new generation of Desi rappers including artists like Imran Khan, Honey Singh, and Emiway Bantai. His label, Kali Denali Music, continues to promote upcoming talent in the underground hip-hop scene.
Bohemia’s impact is more than just musical—he has cultural and generational significance. He gave a voice to the South Asian youth struggling to express themselves in a globalized world. With millions of views across platforms and a cult following, Bohemia remains a trendsetter, and his legacy as the pioneer of Punjabi rap continues to evolve.
Today, Bohemia is celebrated not only as an artist but as a movement, a symbol of fearless expression and identity in modern South Asian music. His lyrical mastery, innovation, and dedication to the culture have earned him legendary status in the Desi hip-hop community.
